Month Of The Young Child

Detroit Celebrates April 27 as the Day of the Young Child

Take Time to Celebrate Your Children with Fun Activities and Learning Opportunities Throughout the Month of April.

The City of Detroit has designated Wednesday, April 27 as Detroit’s Day of the Young Child. On this day and throughout April, we acknowledge the importance of educating our young children by attending fun and educational activities throughout the month. As parents, caregivers, and educators, we understand early childhood development lays the foundation for their future success.

This is six annual Detroit’s Day of the Young Child, designated by Mayor Duggan in 2016, is an offshoot of the Month of the Young Child (MOYC), a time to focus public attention on the needs of young children, their families, and caregivers and recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

First established in 1971 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) as the Week of the Young Child but As interest and focus grew over the years, Trying Together expanded and designated April as the Month of the Young Child.

Not only is this a time to enjoy fun and educational activities taking place throughout the City of Detroit, but it’s also a time to focus on the numerous people, places, and programs that support the healthy development of our next generation of leaders by laying the foundation for their success.
